One year we bought a new washer and dryer and another year we found a gorgeous new dining room set. <br>
After his passing in October I knew he would want my brother and I to be mostly responsible with our inheritance but he would have still wanted each of us to do something we wouldn't have been able to otherwise. <br>
GeoDad and I talked and we decided that while it was great that I had been able to borrow my Grandma's extra sewing machine for nearly 3 years it was probably time to get one of my own. </p><p dir="ltr"><br></p><p dir="ltr">This little fairly basic Husqvarna has sewn a ton and it still is lovely.</p><p dir="ltr">Since moving to Calgary and working at a quilt shop I have learned a ton about both Brother and Bernina sewing machines and have had a chance to use both brands newest and most advanced machines. Over the last few months my choice on favourite machine in the store would vary between the Brother XV-8500D and the Bernina 880 Sterling Edition. </p><p dir="ltr">In the end my final decision was made by realizing that at this point in my sewing life I really enjoy piecing quilts, sewing clothes for my kids and being able to use a stitch regulator for free motion quilting. I wanted the option of embroidery and Bernina has some very cool feet for decorative sewing. So the Bernina won out. Plus the 880 Sterling Edition is a very pretty sewing machine.</p><p dir="ltr">Bernina doesn't include a huge number of feet in most of their machines but the basics you would need are there and I picked up a couple I know I will use. Such as the #10 edge stitch foot and #97 1/4 inch piecing foot and the 3 sole walking foot.</p><p dir="ltr">I am very excited to get to try the Needle Punch Tool which is included with Sterling Edition Accessory pack along with the tools for Cutwork, Crystalwork and Paintwork. </p><p dir="ltr">Anyway, right now I am trying to find homes for all the new things and make some order in the sewing area. I have a baby quilt ready to baste and might give the BSR (Bernina Stitch Regulator) a run for its money to break the machine in.</p>

Last year was a strange one for sewing. I made 3 medium to big quilt tops and finished the largest one and gifted it in May. After that I spent most of the summer and fall heading to visit my Dad in the hospital. There was lots of time to hand sew between car rides and sitting in the hospital. We followed that up with a visit with GeoDad's family at Christmas with another long car ride. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
Project Seventy-Two grew a bunch in the last 6 months. I am now up to 12 whole blocks and 8 setting triangles. At 12 half-hexagons in each triangle and 72 in each full hexagon block the total is 960 (<i>which</i><i> makes me </i><i>think</i><i> </i><i>I definitely</i><i> have a </i><i>problem</i><i> </i><i>and</i><i> should be </i><i>going</i><i> to some sort of EPP support group</i>).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8GeM-H1ZbBEMS6422AhyphenhyphenLj4NZx8MxpzgZOjpUwhCtXyKNnUB4LlfdRCgj2pFhT4-qPL4woTPLZO3eKvZkUFcVY3_A4GGZhyphenhyphenfQJE9miVu9m5tIs7RMnf1V-2n2C6hlMzSNdZjhOZhzIQKv/s1600/P72-12blocks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8GeM-H1ZbBEMS6422AhyphenhyphenLj4NZx8MxpzgZOjpUwhCtXyKNnUB4LlfdRCgj2pFhT4-qPL4woTPLZO3eKvZkUFcVY3_A4GGZhyphenhyphenfQJE9miVu9m5tIs7RMnf1V-2n2C6hlMzSNdZjhOZhzIQKv/s400/P72-12blocks.jpg" width="392" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div dir="ltr">
In order to better manage my thread, needles, snips, papers and fabric while I was going up and down the highway I made a <a href="http://http//www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/accessory/sew-together-bag/36309">Sew Together Bag by Sew Demented</a> and it works great. And I used some of my precious Ann Kelle hippo fabric and some Art Gallery Fabric Nature's elements left over from my wedding flowers. The whole bag makes me happy and is very functional for carting handsewing around. <br />

</div>
Every once in a while I manage to get myself organized enough to do some hand sewing. I have been slowly making blocks for Project Seventy-Two and I have even come up with a more solid plan of what I will do them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Project Seventy-Two is an English Paper Piecing project that I am designing myself. The name comes from the basic requirement I have given myself for each block in the design, as each block contains 72 half-hexagons. Maybe when I am all done I will have a more clever name, but for now this is what it will be. I am also making setting triangles out of half-hexagons to put between the blocks. The half-hexagons have 1 inch sides and the full blocks are 6 inches on each side.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_TLN6Ek1xgP-02RJHkaU7DE2yLI5QiWQeIYsb2hwxCNTmBfE36g_oeD7zHwHzJwRB8D3g6enIYX3BvY1gi_Xc9cwWkacDCH89ZQVtMOEcj8SL3PolIUfwLYc24MV6Bq8nTv4T5paIXJDJ/s1600/IMG_1652.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_TLN6Ek1xgP-02RJHkaU7DE2yLI5QiWQeIYsb2hwxCNTmBfE36g_oeD7zHwHzJwRB8D3g6enIYX3BvY1gi_Xc9cwWkacDCH89ZQVtMOEcj8SL3PolIUfwLYc24MV6Bq8nTv4T5paIXJDJ/s320/IMG_1652.jpg" width="292" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Block 5 - Cube (The first one with a name)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Block 6 </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Block 6 was sewn completely in one weekend while I was away without the kids, it felt great to finish something so quickly. It was a fun one to sew up and has made me want to make more of than one of these blocks every 2 or 3 months.<br />
<div>
<br />
Here are the first 6 all together, bottom row is sewn together and top row is still in pieces because making new blocks is more fun than joining them.<br />

I found a lovely blue floral print that would look great on my blue-eyed, blond haired niece who was about to turn 4. I paired it with Northcott solid blue and turned it into another Peppermint Swirl Dress.<br />

As we took this one to the post office to mail to my niece Monkey asked me to make her another one for her birthday. Shortly after that a friend was clearing out some of her fabric stash and had 2 gorgeous pieces that were each 1.5 m long. Adding a 3rd colour to get enough yardage was easy and I sewed up my third one in the nights leading up to her birthday.</div>

Hope 2 twirly-whirly dresses will be enough for her for a while, but she has said that she thinks she should have 3. Maybe I will find another smoking sale and get some more fabric for a 3rd one.<br />

Anyway, life has funny way of giving people a big middle finger when you start thinking that way and throws curve balls in your face.<br>
<br>
Shortly after the wedding <i>life</i> happened.<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIgHYcx1BGaL3wvpHa3ZLLghPbepDc2cnzBMqdrGvc7-10mTFuzSdWsgNTvwPB3VEkz-d_AZb27Ho328uQU5OPDGkjbpFPWUbvPmulg-rlSdSb__SV5veUjWNfj0ZkVqh73FqIGvyrNeYl/s640/blogger-image-1559568225.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIgHYcx1BGaL3wvpHa3ZLLghPbepDc2cnzBMqdrGvc7-10mTFuzSdWsgNTvwPB3VEkz-d_AZb27Ho328uQU5OPDGkjbpFPWUbvPmulg-rlSdSb__SV5veUjWNfj0ZkVqh73FqIGvyrNeYl/s640/blogger-image-1559568225.jpg"></a></div><br>
Anyway, there is nothing about the situation that I can change myself. So I did what quilters around the world do. I sewed.<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh71mIj5tJ7DrdJFD7zGoOr_8NE9x-evh8g7auY-jRvg6j2P2Vof8hag4iM12hR8_7tgM0x-ttQw7k3gd9Bb7wCL_YyhLbdVqFO61l86n4WccNWZesoCVtxK7ueKN44vQxjshLscphesivG/s640/blogger-image--1395303765.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh71mIj5tJ7DrdJFD7zGoOr_8NE9x-evh8g7auY-jRvg6j2P2Vof8hag4iM12hR8_7tgM0x-ttQw7k3gd9Bb7wCL_YyhLbdVqFO61l86n4WccNWZesoCVtxK7ueKN44vQxjshLscphesivG/s640/blogger-image--1395303765.jpg"></a></div><br>
I took an afternoon off work and pieced most of a quilt top.<br>
Spent the next week of evenings adding borders and making a backing.<div><br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPsrHq5FZPsBiKQTNrgNSJKFg1922Z0cfPWrBAKXKxHM8f_pbDL2nPB93P0j1_I3gi_eBtaBmdAic6lCNnPsmRAoV6PRAopU7dlVPYDEhi5uVji7Rzc8ApTN0qMveKR-AfJI4l8pUJGBaB/s640/blogger-image--1309304026.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPsrHq5FZPsBiKQTNrgNSJKFg1922Z0cfPWrBAKXKxHM8f_pbDL2nPB93P0j1_I3gi_eBtaBmdAic6lCNnPsmRAoV6PRAopU7dlVPYDEhi5uVji7Rzc8ApTN0qMveKR-AfJI4l8pUJGBaB/s640/blogger-image--1309304026.jpg"></a></div><br>

It took about a week to get binding sewn on.<br>
And this is the biggest quilt I have ever made and it took start to finish less than 3 weeks. <i>(A bit of a whirlwind if you will and I had a deadline, it was getting on plane with me to be gifted to someone when I arrived). </i><br>
<br>
The embroidered label is simple, it says "May this bring you tranquility where ever you are."<br>

Name: Tranquility<br>
Pattern: <i>Majestic Beauties </i>by Daphne B.<br>
Fabrics: All from the Majestic Beauties Collection for Willington Prints<br>
Size: 96"x98"<br>
Quilted by me on a rental Handi Quilter Fusion 24<br>
Thread: Pieced using Presencia 60wt,<br>
Quilting top thread Isacord Embroidery thread, color Old Gold,<br>
Quilting Bob Thread Wonderfil DecoBob in light grey<br>
Notes: The pantograph I used was called Peacock Palm, it seemed fitting and I wanted it to have feathers, but have never quilted feathers before. The pantograph was very forgiving because nothing had to line up to closely. I didn't realize how much quilting it would be when I started. It is quite dense for a pantograph and very time consuming for such a large quilt. I used more than 2 km of thread between the top and bottom threads for the quilting on this one.</div><div><br></div><div>The quilt was gifted to half of the couple it was intended for while the other was out of the country. Now that they have both seen it they are planning sheets and decor to match. I know it will be treasured and I hope it brings them tranquility. </div><div><br></div><div>GeoMama<br>

Part 2: The Peppermint Swirl DressA while before wedding plans got rolling I came across a beautiful pattern for a little girl's dress. It was called the Peppermint Swirl Dress by<a href="http://candycastlepatterns.com/patterns/dresses/peppermint-swirl-dress.html"> Candy Castle Patterns</a>. I was in love and thought that Monkey would be too.<br />
<br />
After we pick the tuxedos for the GeoDad and Groomsmen I decided to make Monkey's dress in pink and gray. Since I was using Art Gallery Fabrics Nature's Elements and Floral Elements for the wedding flowers <i>(see previous<a href="http://geomommy.blogspot.ca/2015/04/i-married-geodad-part-1-flowers.html"> post</a> for those photos and info), </i>I thought it would be nice to have Monkey in the same fabrics. The dress uses a ton of fabric, and takes lots of time but it is so worth it.<br />

Monkey adores her twirly-whirly dress and asks to wear 3 or 4 days a week. She is getting tons of use out of it.<br />

I will say that the amount of time and fabric is totally worth it because she loves wearing it. Also, I may have turned my daughter into a dress/skirt snob; no others are twirly-whirly enough, and she will occasionally throw a tantrum if she puts on another dress and tests it twirl and it doesn't measure up. </div>

Part 1: The FlowersJust under 3 weeks ago GeoDad and finally got married. We have been planning to do so since before Monkey was born and she turns 4 next month. We had the perfect day picked:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
March 14, 2015 - Pi Day</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
GeoDad officially proposed in October, 2013 and we sort of started the planning stages of the wedding, but mostly put off any big planning until after we bought our new house last summer. Once the venue, a local hall, was picked and I had my dress I started to think about flowers. I knew I would be having our photos done outside no matter the weather. <i>(GeoDad and I have parkas, I was willing to wear them if needed). </i>I didn't really want to pay a premium for fresh flowers in the middle of winter in Alberta just to have them wilt in the cold and I like making things myself.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I set off online searching through tutorials on fabric flowers, I had a plan and no one was going to stop me. Initially I was picturing something elaborate with silk, organza, felt and fabric and had I not liked my first couple flowers so much I may have gone that direction. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnAhy0ibL9u6XpNWdHhbNCR0g1Okr52l5QWZGFNChALaLBBYaD1WEHF0iDpF5pOl6MQ5AKSyAyA4cbG4SWIcx4Fx16PJYs2iWWFn-Nw0LpMOvMwKBcfmyQ-3BFy0h6qbk_bUDqMW10gkqM/s1600/IMG_1328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnAhy0ibL9u6XpNWdHhbNCR0g1Okr52l5QWZGFNChALaLBBYaD1WEHF0iDpF5pOl6MQ5AKSyAyA4cbG4SWIcx4Fx16PJYs2iWWFn-Nw0LpMOvMwKBcfmyQ-3BFy0h6qbk_bUDqMW10gkqM/s1600/IMG_1328.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Craft night with 2 bridesmaids, my mom, grandma and brother.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Anyway, I made a single trial flower then spent a night at my Mom's having a wedding craft night. We managed to make about 30 flowers between the 6 of us and I am sure they all thought I was crazy. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJZv50LvTBDCu0thc6ebC559Trpg5oliRyvc7poAIDtmja5yWiFBpCCjopVxnX5N1zG3aV6vUoirjQEC22gXo92ZCug8NkP_BbUkMjjj5UhX5RapOdOdSLvPLFVP0RPtCJIDBP1eHpF8KL/s1600/IMG_1329.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJZv50LvTBDCu0thc6ebC559Trpg5oliRyvc7poAIDtmja5yWiFBpCCjopVxnX5N1zG3aV6vUoirjQEC22gXo92ZCug8NkP_BbUkMjjj5UhX5RapOdOdSLvPLFVP0RPtCJIDBP1eHpF8KL/s1600/IMG_1329.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But I am crazy and very determined. I loved how adorable the covered button is as the flower centre and prepping to sew these was simple. Starch fabric, cut rectangles, fold and sew. After our first craft night I started working on them while I watched TV. By mid January I had 100 made. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

16 flowers barely covered half of it. And I had 5 bouquets to make in total and boutonnieres. So I kept sewing and ordered more brads/buttons to cover and made somewhere between 200 and 230 flowers. As the wedding approached I started taking half an hour in the mornings before work to hot glue bouquets together. But by the time the big day rolled around I was done. </div>

We had a fabulous day and all the bridesmaids get to keep their bouquet forever. I am so happy that I kept going with my crazy plan for flowers. I will write another post or two about Monkey's flower girl dress and the ring pillow I made. (<i>Maybe I will sneak in some of a shot of GeoDad and I doing something sappy, like kissing). </i></div>

I was unable to attend the celebration but wanted to make something special for them.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
C plays electric guitar and his wife plays piano. I found paper pieced patterns for both instruments from Soma Archaya at <a href="http://www.whimsandfancies.com/">www.whimsandfancies.com</a> . They were perfect and I was eager to have another paper pieced challenge. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The blocks came together fairly quickly before Christmas and then I stalled out when it came time to quilt them and assemble into pillows. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The guitar frets were satin stitched with an ivory coloured Isacord thread and the strings stitched with black and silver metallic Sulky thread. </div>
<div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Around each instrument I echo quilted at about 1/4 inch spacing with the ivory Isacord. In the border, simple straight outlines with black Presencia thread.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I had planned to make the pillows the same size but I didn't want to change the size of the blocks out of fear of scaling all the tiny little pieces and not having them go together properly. The guitars dimensions didn't work great to border on a square pillow which is why I set it on point. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It felt great to put the final stitches in the binding last night and they will be mailed to the newlyweds tomorrow. </div>

Since getting back I have been trying to get projects finished but I am also less than 60 days away from being a married lady (ack.. so much left to do!) so there has been more wedding prep than sewing.<br />
<br />
<br />
First off, before Christmas I managed to piece and put borders on 2 paper pieced blocks designed by Some Archaya from <a href="http://www.whimsandfancies.com/">http://www.whimsandfancies.com/</a>. Both the piano and the electric guitar came together very nicely despite being a crazy amount of pieces. The plan was to have these quilted into pillows in time for a wedding gift but I was too exhausted to finish before the event. They will receive them before they have been married a month though, so that should be just fine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3uM6-7EQVpo2GmG_ItD2d4kMY8O7i_jszix2-L3YWuTsXEFT9DmuIzG58hT_4vjDRSQUFw9oDyHQJnU6EnJ8ir20X_tw5haNy2qXAHj0kIJdLb3SleMCecJg_GzbbJmKpog7jwohepO9L/s1600/IMG_1396.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3uM6-7EQVpo2GmG_ItD2d4kMY8O7i_jszix2-L3YWuTsXEFT9DmuIzG58hT_4vjDRSQUFw9oDyHQJnU6EnJ8ir20X_tw5haNy2qXAHj0kIJdLb3SleMCecJg_GzbbJmKpog7jwohepO9L/s1600/IMG_1396.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIShUGSx6PgTdJTSCmRQGpGmFJ9HXk7ZTv6FxwuI6uq5SR0Q1QrdT9lboafvNZXbt1n3T5DduFXWQtYrSyQeZ_wOM09R9GtDzeC4VKx003ZqOwrrOstLd0FLCEmwJiYoBB7EPTRjlaKCaR/s1600/IMG_1397.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIShUGSx6PgTdJTSCmRQGpGmFJ9HXk7ZTv6FxwuI6uq5SR0Q1QrdT9lboafvNZXbt1n3T5DduFXWQtYrSyQeZ_wOM09R9GtDzeC4VKx003ZqOwrrOstLd0FLCEmwJiYoBB7EPTRjlaKCaR/s1600/IMG_1397.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I found that not wanting to baste in my unfinished basement was a big hurdle, but I finally bit the dust and did it last weekend. Since then I have been quilting pillow tops and backs. Echo quilting around the guitar and piano and then just simple lines in the borders.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHicu30GD8Tx9HHDHAup1-8pOPSW4CU2RXyufHEc2H9Ah1zKAC420rUvRQXxu15ec6mFqXxZZ1Fk71CfBOpQdkWvgwqzMXNNbhItR8IZl2t7ufLEVhmNWeW-eD3PANsFD3KTdkqsVyKQ4J/s1600/IMG_1446.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHicu30GD8Tx9HHDHAup1-8pOPSW4CU2RXyufHEc2H9Ah1zKAC420rUvRQXxu15ec6mFqXxZZ1Fk71CfBOpQdkWvgwqzMXNNbhItR8IZl2t7ufLEVhmNWeW-eD3PANsFD3KTdkqsVyKQ4J/s1600/IMG_1446.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also just before Christmas I did a small commission project. A simple diaper cover, suspenders and bowtie for a friend's son's first birthday. She wanted to do a cake smash photo shoot and have him all dressed up. It was pretty quick once I got going and she loved it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just after Christmas we went away to the mountains and I had a lovely time hand sewing all week. I sewed whole new block for Project Seventy-Two as well as 2 setting triangles. I was a little short on fabric but managed to finish a day after getting back. I also ran out of half-hexie papers for English Paper Piecing and had to scavenge out of the middle of the block to finish the edges and setting triangles.</div>

This block brings the total to 4 blocks and I am finally starting to think about the bigger picture and what I want this quilt to look like. But I am not ready to share what that is just yet. All I can tell you is that I need ALOT more half hexagon papers and way more time. </div>

Finally, I have been slowly sewing away on my wedding flowers. I have about 30 completely done, and another 35-40 sewn that don't have centers yet. I have no idea how many I actually need for each bouquet, but for sure I need 5 bouquets and some extras for boutonnieres and corsages. </div>

Once pillows are done for my cousin it will be time to make a flower girl dress for Monkey and a ring bearer pillow for LB to carry. I am very excited to start on both projects and hope to have them both done by mid-February so I can relax for the month before the wedding.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have finally finished making curtains for the kids bedrooms. They weren't difficult but it took me 3 times longer than I thought it might because I was easily distracted every time I finished hemming one of the edges. Not that hemming the edges was hard, I just don't enjoy it.<br />

This was my first time using grommets and I was pleased with how easily the plastic snap together ones worked. I am just not thrilled with the finishes some of colours.<br />

The curtains for both kids' rooms are just quilting cotton which although its not ideal for drapery the prints were perfect and I got the yardage at a great price.<br />

<br />
GeoDad and I had a weekend away last weekend and I spent a ton of time stitching hexies together for my Not Your Grandma's Garden Quilt. I pieced 8 rows of 12, and sewed 3 of those rows into a block that will easily attach to the main piece.<br />

<br />
The other thing keeping us on our toes is demolition and remediation in the basement. We found mold when we first moved in and had a crew in cleaning it up last week. Along the way they also found asbestos so the project keeps getting more expensive and is taking more days. Good news in all of that though is that I have been able to sew a bit in the mornings while I wait for them to arrive.<br />

<br />
This morning I took Tycho's old ratty collar cut off all the hardware and made her a new one. It was pretty easy as I had some webbing that I recycled out of my infant carseat which had expired and the LQS had duponi silk on sale during the summer. The collar is very pretty but won't last long if we let her wear it when she wrestles with my brother or mom's dogs.<br />

I will probably go back into blogger silence for the next few weeks as I have some secret sewing to do before the holidays. Then when the new year starts I have a couple projects that will need to get done for my March wedding. And if blog is quiet I have a hard time not sharing photos over on instagram! Follow me @geomamaquilts for sneak peaks of secret sewing.<br />

It has been my keeping sane project through 2 months of renos, packing, moving, unpacking and settling into a new routine in our new house.<br />
<br />
So without further ado. Here it is, the Tools Baby Quilt for my new nephew.<br />

<b>Quilts Stats:</b><br />
<b>Pattern: </b><i>Tools, Baby! </i>By Kelli Fannin of <a href="http://thatlookslikeitneedsstitches.blogspot.ca/">http://thatlookslikeitneedsstitches.blogspot.ca/</a><br />
<b>Size: </b>48"x 48" (or so)<br />
<b>Fabric: </b>Background is Kona White, most of the colours are from the Kaufman blender line Dazzle. Backing is Shannon Cuddle Light blue dimples.<br />
<b>Piecing: </b>Pieced on my grandma's Husqvarna Viking with 60wt Presencia Thread<br />
<b>Quilting: </b>Freemotion quilted by me on an APQS Millie Longarm with white Glide Tec thread<br />
<b>Binding: </b>Green Dazzle fabric is machine stitched.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Notes: </b><b style="font-style: italic;"> </b>I really enjoyed putting this quilt together because it came together so easily. I chose to omit the borders because the quilt was big enough to be a good sized baby blanket and I really didn't want to have to piece the minkee/cuddle for the backing. It was fun to free motion quilt this on the longarm and I am eager to try it again to improve my skills. Plus minkee is so wonderfully cuddly for baby quilts and it was so easy to manage it on the longarm.<br />

Although individually each pillow would fit in the mini category they were made as a pair as a wedding gift and I felt that the small category would be a better fit. These pillows finished up just over 20" square each.<br />
<br />
The skier block was designed by Amy Friend of <a href="http://www.duringquiettime.com/">www.duringquiettime.com</a>. It is a paper pieced block with a huge amount of teeny tiny pieces. I wasn't sure I had the skills necessary to make it, but after a couple weeks of very careful sewing they came out great.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilting on front was mostly stitch in the ditch and echo quilting the mountain lines. The ski poles were quilted using 30wt purple thread as were the pillow backs.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The original plan was to have plain purple borders, but as I was sewing late at night I realized I had used more of the purple fabrics that I had calculated for. I choose to extend the mountain range beyond the green frame and I think provided a great finishing touch. </div>

To put things lightly, it has been crazy busy. Through September we did renos at our new house, packed the old one, ran into problems with the new basement and eventually moved.<br />
<br />
Since then we have been getting settled into new routines and trying to get things unpacked and organized (<i>which is WAY harder with toddlers around). </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
Up until now I had been working part time at the local quilt store learning to be a sewing machine technician and I only worked every other day. As we had to change childcare around after moving we decided it was probably time to put the kids in daycare full time. This has proved to be way harder than I expected.<br />
<br />
Monkey is in a toddler room where most kids nap every day, and now she is napping some days and not other days. The days she naps she stays up an hour later than her normal bedtime. She had been quite liking the alternate home/daycare days before and is not enjoying going to daycare 2 or more days in a row.<br />
<br />
LB on the other hand seems to be adjusting just fine. He wasn't going to bed well at the other house and he still isn't. But he is ending up in our bed more often and longer in the night. The daycare ladies have told me that he is doing great while he is there.<br />
<br />
Just to make life a little more fun the kids have had 2 colds in the last 3 weeks. GeoDad and I have had to take turns staying home with them (<i>since you definitely can't go to daycare with a fever</i>).<br />
<br />
Due to the location of the new house I would need to take a bus and the train to get to work and it would probably take longer than I think it should. So since moving I have been biking the ~5km to work. It is only taking 20-25 minutes depending on the day and it is very refreshing to get some exercise a couple times a day. All in all I am enjoying being at work full time but I am exhausted by the end of day.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Can't complain about biking past this twice a day.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
There is lots of sewing I would like to be doing but most nights by the time the kids are sleeping I am too worn out to even think about it. And some of my free time in the evenings has been spent on wedding planning as our wedding is less than 5 months away (<i>ack... so much to do and figure out still).</i><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Closer to workable.. Need to unpack and make a spot for the ironing board.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<i><br /></i>
Anyway, I think the blogging/sewing slump is coming to an end. Last weekend my brother laid some beautiful laminate flooring in the sewing area and I finally have a spot to sit down and sew. Tonight I finished putting the binding on the Tools Baby Quilt that I longarm quilted a couple weekends ago (<i>so here's hoping I get a finished quilt post written this weekend). </i><br />

</div>
We have been busy. Not normal busy with toddlers... <b>super busy</b>. September 2nd we got keys to our new house and since we planned to have 4 weeks of overlap with the 2 houses it means that I have been splitting my time between them. Attempting to keep up with normal things like laundry and dishes at the current house and painting, demolition and construction at the new place.<br />

So far we have striped wallpaper off of 6 walls, 2 in the dining room and all 4 in LB's room. I had family down for one weekend and they painted all the closets on the main floor (and closets are super slow to paint). We also got 2 coats of red on one of LB's walls, 2 coats of light pink on Monkey's 1 wall, the first coat of white on 2 walls in each kids room and the first coat of dark pink on Monkey's 4th wall. The dining room and half the living got both coats of white done.<br />

<br />
We tore out a wall that had some ugly mirror tiles and scary texture on it, and my brother re-drywalled and started mudding it. We removed bifold closet doors and replaced a few with new ones, which also needed a coat of paint.<br />

<br />
<br />
GeoDad has been on furniture building duty (some new dressers for the kids from Ikea) and switching out all the light switches and electrical outlets (as the old ones were yellowish from age, and new ones make the place feel so much cleaner).<br />
<br />
It was all going very well, except for a small (we hoped) moisture problem in the basement... Turns out after having a contractor from the condo board in and an air quality specialist, we have a bigger problem than we hoped. We are still working on how to solve it and hopefully we can get it mostly dealt with before we move in next week.<br />
<br />
As if all that at the new house wasn't enough, I got a call to do some contract geophysics work. Not stellar timing for how much was on my plate, but the extra cash will definitely help with the basement demolition.<br />
<br />
We also had to deal with the collapse of our gazebo at the house we are currently living in during the freak September snowstorm which is being called 'Snowtember' throughout Calgary.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMS0s37vlfJ2CQnyMoBq5igLg3UM1b_T3L4OShIED24QvxFkg1XSUhPV1nLxzIiIFRgm93yGCBobTGi2rQ9m7OA4bMFBmqnzC3usR7jVDX5_KkDXqqu3frpisv59xzOfIcs1G9jSs8VaSS/s1600/IMG_1135.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMS0s37vlfJ2CQnyMoBq5igLg3UM1b_T3L4OShIED24QvxFkg1XSUhPV1nLxzIiIFRgm93yGCBobTGi2rQ9m7OA4bMFBmqnzC3usR7jVDX5_KkDXqqu3frpisv59xzOfIcs1G9jSs8VaSS/s1600/IMG_1135.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So after the first 2.5 weeks of chaos, I finally needed a down day. I let the kids watch cartoons and run around all day and I sat and sewed. It was a wonderful break. I have almost completed a quilt top for my new nephew, and hopefully I will get a chance to write a proper sewing post about it after we have moved.<br />

I checked my page views this week and I am at <b>10058!!!</b> I think that I pretty exciting and I had no idea that I would ever make it that far. So thank you. Thank you. Thank you.<br />
<br />
Summer has been great for hand stitching while my kids play in the yard. It has been a super hot summer so we are all getting in lots of time outside and if we are at home I almost always have my hand sewing with me. It lives in sandwich sized plastic bin on counter so it is always ready to go.<br />
<br />
Over the last couple weeks I have completely the third block of Project Seventy-Two, which was made with 72 half-hexagons.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK4uSNuhAhLBFvLThQgN79a0JBiibV_nqHAEYZae28UxMQVZCkHQowy1jdPqyquU4hS1lUXmjLpuanPlxxTmrL8bQgMRZ71rQScBUk6l2Z8EWf9hzE-OVqFIs5Tb9svY8QhyphenhyphenWLkMEApCli/s1600/IMG_0839.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK4uSNuhAhLBFvLThQgN79a0JBiibV_nqHAEYZae28UxMQVZCkHQowy1jdPqyquU4hS1lUXmjLpuanPlxxTmrL8bQgMRZ71rQScBUk6l2Z8EWf9hzE-OVqFIs5Tb9svY8QhyphenhyphenWLkMEApCli/s1600/IMG_0839.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Project Seventy-Two is coming along nicely (<i>I think</i>). I would love to say I have a clear game plan for it, but I don't and I am not in any rush to get one. I knew I didn't want the blocks to touch one another so I chose to separate them with setting triangles of a fourth contrasting colour. Here are the first two triangles, also make with half-hexies, sewn onto 2 blocks.<br />

<br />
And the August BOM<br />
<br />
<br />
As if that wasn't enough stuff on the go outside and away from my sewing room, I also finished 2 wedding gifts (read about them <a href="http://geomommy.blogspot.ca/2014/07/bento-box-aka-jamjar2014-quilt-finish.html">here</a>, and <a href="http://geomommy.blogspot.ca/2014/08/snapshot-of-skiers-quilted-pillows.html">here</a>).<br />
<br />
And made a dress for Monkey to wear to the second wedding (which I finished sewing in the truck on the way out to event)<br />

<br />
And finally, I felt it was time to sew something for me <i>(or rather, work on a project for me that I started back in the spring). </i>The main piece of it almost all quilted, and I am still trying to decide on the rest of the details.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It started with a very large number of very tiny pieces.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1YvH-w3RNrEUT_z4-yLXp9Gwt_gX6wjoQqJWr6dcO6Um3oeJqUcc_PtL2vPNIZKj5d_DCcOlRXDJ9oyx4pH-t-TfsWtDYFZyxXopqy5xlCz_dNPJRmR5NXyK5vZCo7B-jMuJmBvzM86mh/s1600/IMG_0830.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1YvH-w3RNrEUT_z4-yLXp9Gwt_gX6wjoQqJWr6dcO6Um3oeJqUcc_PtL2vPNIZKj5d_DCcOlRXDJ9oyx4pH-t-TfsWtDYFZyxXopqy5xlCz_dNPJRmR5NXyK5vZCo7B-jMuJmBvzM86mh/s1600/IMG_0830.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Slowly they came together.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMQCTjdD9IVR4fSWUDQXSJ0LCSf5s0UK0Sjsj-V-3GwuQp2XQ4_Tt3yfzS4muw9w8ZEg0AnGq1f6y0QJ2srHWKQC6p24A_XSTOnmg5UnUrNRSKFiO4zWC1nU5r0e78KySIiQScT24glXvh/s1600/IMG_0847.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMQCTjdD9IVR4fSWUDQXSJ0LCSf5s0UK0Sjsj-V-3GwuQp2XQ4_Tt3yfzS4muw9w8ZEg0AnGq1f6y0QJ2srHWKQC6p24A_XSTOnmg5UnUrNRSKFiO4zWC1nU5r0e78KySIiQScT24glXvh/s1600/IMG_0847.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When my eyes got tired from staring at the tiny pieces I made some patchwork envelope style pillow backs.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFJqp3JDFrLNJXOjl0KBWR-o6Sq8nMnYmyqAO0Mi7H8WRbn3Guu8onnpp6lzqv_vcxThPJUdh8aHi1Yl16emRaTZaO3Q0Q4aJAyarAXfXA7gQhbsWwpVABT78tpShTUuDo4tIjo6Hkd8UZ/s1600/IMG_0874.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFJqp3JDFrLNJXOjl0KBWR-o6Sq8nMnYmyqAO0Mi7H8WRbn3Guu8onnpp6lzqv_vcxThPJUdh8aHi1Yl16emRaTZaO3Q0Q4aJAyarAXfXA7gQhbsWwpVABT78tpShTUuDo4tIjo6Hkd8UZ/s1600/IMG_0874.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did some stitch ripping after assembling some pieces in the wrong order.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzRn1CPKsFrjCKyiGx628wqYMyxsajQLSwvLg-g1ohyV-gfQm0SG_o6EpA2y0FrjFeWeXNn612YqaMhgsSbHOuCrayvk08iBjmj1HlNfg_31Vu7SUhXRjT_tjfXPMnW40YwzBSffjVGKDR/s1600/IMG_0881.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzRn1CPKsFrjCKyiGx628wqYMyxsajQLSwvLg-g1ohyV-gfQm0SG_o6EpA2y0FrjFeWeXNn612YqaMhgsSbHOuCrayvk08iBjmj1HlNfg_31Vu7SUhXRjT_tjfXPMnW40YwzBSffjVGKDR/s1600/IMG_0881.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But eventually I had a skier pieced and ready for a border. But due to some miscalculation and lack of planning, I did not have enough purple to do square borders</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtWsTUZL9gXOfK0HNWojkx5U_nqS1sMS37cce7rvglvwdQGgxmdsPGB5sJQA-BA72OGVzyz2O-DhuLZamrQlsIo5McXWBMJcLnzQ_M4YdmYxHU2KakXeZOH_T0hFglKkHUC5m38bjHM-sb/s1600/IMG_0890.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtWsTUZL9gXOfK0HNWojkx5U_nqS1sMS37cce7rvglvwdQGgxmdsPGB5sJQA-BA72OGVzyz2O-DhuLZamrQlsIo5McXWBMJcLnzQ_M4YdmYxHU2KakXeZOH_T0hFglKkHUC5m38bjHM-sb/s1600/IMG_0890.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I extended the mountain range.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7L5k_dytQpVvExRAZKvnoaYgprfeGWU4tJAMyCt5AvVMI1Ew007bxY3LZrHLN0F2x_u2-VMnv6kqcwgsAvx6ohls3QVN35u15XeSQN1xvFJniDh4kRWlTRD51tSe0CzrmyM57-WCRYzXo/s1600/IMG_0898.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7L5k_dytQpVvExRAZKvnoaYgprfeGWU4tJAMyCt5AvVMI1Ew007bxY3LZrHLN0F2x_u2-VMnv6kqcwgsAvx6ohls3QVN35u15XeSQN1xvFJniDh4kRWlTRD51tSe0CzrmyM57-WCRYzXo/s1600/IMG_0898.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Backs were quilted with simple straight lines and the lines of mountains were echoed on the front. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ski poles were added using the variegated purple thread that most of the quilting was done in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Envelope backs were stitched to the quilted fronts, and then a pretty binding was added by machine.</div>
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And then 2 pillow form were stuffed inside!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now for a few details,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><i>Quilt Stats:</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Name:</b> Snap of Skiers Pillows</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Size: </b>20" x 20" (each)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Pattern credits:</b> Amy Friend from <a href="http://duringquiettime.com/">During Quiet Time</a> for her <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilting/home-decor/vintage-skier-paper-pieced-block/15632">Vintage Skier Paper Pieced Block</a>, the rest of the design is my own.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Piecing:</b> Skiers, paper pieced using 60wt Presencia Thread, Patchwork and borders, pieced using 60wt Presencia thread</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Batting</b>: Quilter's Dream Select (<i>pieced together scraps using batting tape</i>)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Quilting:</b> Quilted on my Grandma's Husqvarna Viking Sewing machine. Thread used white 60wt Presencia, light green 50wt presencia and 30wt Wonderfil Mirage variegated purple thread. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Binding:</b> Machine stitched. (<i>The machine wasn't super happy about going through 8 layers of fabric and 3 layers of batting on the overlap of the envelope, but it survived</i>)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Notes: </b>I would have loved to make a quilt for my cousin and her new hubby as their wedding gift, but with both time and budget constraints pillows were a much better option. They are both great skiers, so when I saw the Vintage Skier Block by Amy Friend I knew I would be perfect. I was slightly intimidated by the tiny pieces but I went slow and used lots and lots of sewline gluestick glue to keep pieces in place while I stitched and finger pressed all seams really well. I am so excited that it worked and I am pretty sure I built my paper piecing skills by leaps and bounds. It was a super fun project and the wedding was beautiful.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I was super excited to help out, and directed them towards several patterns that I would like to make and let them choose what would suit her brother the best.<br />
They picked the <a href="http://www.traceybrookshier.com/">Bento Box pattern by Tracey Brookshier</a>.<br />
Then one evening while I was working they met me at the quilt store where I work and I let them loose to pick fabric. My only directions were 21 prints to make half the blocks, and we would choose a contrasting colour to make the other half.<br />
<br />
<i>Chaos ensued.</i><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
They came back with flannels, cotton prints and batiks. Sure mixing cotton and batiks isn't unheard of, but flannel and batik together sounds like a recipe for a quilting disaster.<br />
<div>
<br />
Most of the fabrics were chosen because they represented something the bride and groom like.<br />
Santa Ornaments - the bride loves Christmas<br />
Wine, Beer, Cigars - the couple enjoys socializing with friends and family<br />
Beavers - they are Canadian<br />
Hunting - hunters, as the groom hunts and dancing bears - they met through dance<br />
Woodgrain - the groom lays hardwood flooring for living<br />
Hearts - the quilt is a wedding gift, it only seems right to throw some hearts in the mix<br />
Peeps - family joke about the marshmallow easter candy<br />
Bandaids - the groom is known to always have bandaids around<br />
Music - music is a big part of their lives, the groom sings in an a cappella group<br />
<br />
A few of the other fabrics were picked simply because they were pretty, and a few fabrics were swapped to try and make the slightly wild colour palette more cohesive.<br />
<br />
Lastly we picked a contrast fabric that would be in all the blocks. A straight solid didn't do the trick, so we picked Tonga Batik Blender in Java.<br />
<br />
To manage the differences in fabrics I starched everything quilt heavily with Mary Ellen's Best Press before cutting and sewing. I pre-washed all the flannel, and it still didn't really get along with the batiks, but I made it work.<br />
<br />
Here are few of my favourite blocks. The hunting and santa fabric was fussy cut and it was perfect that most of it worked into 2.5 inch squares.<br />

I had my friend come over once all the blocks were squared up and we played with the layout. We tried keeping the 4 patch blocks as pairs, and that didn't feel quite right, so we mixed and matched and came up with the final layout.</div>

I quilted it on an APQS Lucey Longarm with the Sparrow Studioz & My Sewing Room rental program in Calgary. I used a pantograph called Happy Times and Glide-Tec polyester thread, black on the top and dark grey on the back. This was my first time longarming a quilt and I doubt that I will be able to go back to finishing big ones on my domestic machine. I think the pantograph worked great with the camo print used on the back and the scale was great with the size of the blocks on the front.</div>

Once done on the longarm, it was binding time. I had saved the bandaid fabric just for this. I love stripey bindings, and as I suspected, the bandaids look like a funky stripe when reduced down to a 1/4 inch. Binding was attached by hand to the front and hand stitched down on the back.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pattern: <i>Bento Box by Tracey Brookshier</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Size: <i>71"x83" (I only lost an inch in seam allowances and trimming from what it was supposed to finish at)</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Piecing: <i>Done with 50wt Presencia thread in black on my Grandma's Husqvarna Viking </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Quilting: <i>On a rental APQS Lucey Longarm with Glide-Tec thread</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Batting: <i>Quilter's Dream Select </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Binding: <i>2.5 inch double fold binding, machine attached to the front and handstitched to the back using 50wt Presencia thread.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Started: <i>Fabric picked in late February 2014, started sewing in March, took long breaks and made other things in between. Quilted in June. Bound in July during a heat wave. I should not hand bind big quilts in heat waves. Finshed a couple weeks before the wedding. </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Notes: <i>I am not generally a fan of scrappy quilts. I was slightly horrified by my friend's fabric choices and was quite worried that it was going to look terrible when it was all done. I think our choice of contrast fabric saved it. The Java batik played so nicely with all the other colours and kept them from actually touching. As I started making the blocks I became a bigger and bigger fan of what was happening and knew that it was going to be perfect for the couple. I had a really hard time not sharing more photos along the way. I sent many photos to my friends as I went through the process and it was so nice to keep them involved with layout process. This quilt was commissioned and the arrangement we had was that my friends would buy all the supplies and cover some of my time. I think that is a good system and I will use it again if I am asked to make another quilt. </i></div>

Our landlords decided they needed to sell our place, and with a slightly insane rental market in Calgary we thought it would be better to buy a new place. We looked at 8 places over 4 days, put an offer in on one, and now are waiting the home inspection, etc., to be finalized. In amongst all the house shopping I did find tiny bits of time for sewing.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLjOuNqHFsVUMGDRKiGlzu3C2efIwjOLaHRD1ozisSmsuTf4ThXQeQnE76Cs32Iej1Qz8BFq37I2TU-B7EjgPG1eOjzWOb2-5n0qZwYF-3e9JoyxgCpOEOF9qdf2_y3_o5ST9qW0GxUCCl/s640/blogger-image--956001753.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLjOuNqHFsVUMGDRKiGlzu3C2efIwjOLaHRD1ozisSmsuTf4ThXQeQnE76Cs32Iej1Qz8BFq37I2TU-B7EjgPG1eOjzWOb2-5n0qZwYF-3e9JoyxgCpOEOF9qdf2_y3_o5ST9qW0GxUCCl/s640/blogger-image--956001753.jpg"></a></div><br>
I was surprised to see a second envelope in the mail, and thought it was a happy coincidence that a swatch with a Dr. Who themed print had arrived just days before a friend from the Yukon was going to be driving through on his way to move to Quebec. This friend is the one who I first watched Dr. Who with. He and his wife are lots of fun, and definitely not normal. So making them a nice square wall hanging just didn't seem right.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxDECoLS6SajkkO9OkUfktqtgryxe9p1DC4F49rVFtX1H7haV-6Ht0n15FfsOWpZ1BG9uLKc5UfeOo50NiLiLJdQ-DIIduJCyv8FzXdLDMWWJu-hk7M0uRBuHpNVkktrE8ewONU2sf_Tj0/s640/blogger-image--596073581.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxDECoLS6SajkkO9OkUfktqtgryxe9p1DC4F49rVFtX1H7haV-6Ht0n15FfsOWpZ1BG9uLKc5UfeOo50NiLiLJdQ-DIIduJCyv8FzXdLDMWWJu-hk7M0uRBuHpNVkktrE8ewONU2sf_Tj0/s640/blogger-image--596073581.jpg"></a></div><br>
<br>
I took the square swatch and added 3 wonky improv borders.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLU9AtNGSFS_9lFg9Yknc-HvExCeeAs3EFjc-1lYKu46PjQoUUAtDImieXRbRCLXAASKdqd0KXU7cY3B6_4L2DMuK0-JUeQRQDBumw5s5lbPqvgq3q2APnAwO65KdvEu7YwrHKpWl5Dhrn/s640/blogger-image-119845791.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLU9AtNGSFS_9lFg9Yknc-HvExCeeAs3EFjc-1lYKu46PjQoUUAtDImieXRbRCLXAASKdqd0KXU7cY3B6_4L2DMuK0-JUeQRQDBumw5s5lbPqvgq3q2APnAwO65KdvEu7YwrHKpWl5Dhrn/s640/blogger-image-119845791.jpg"></a></div><br>Then stitched in the ditch.<br>

And finally added echo quilting with my walking foot around the tardis.<br>

<br>
It was a blast to sew something so unique and know that it would be appreciated. <i>(I was giddy, and bouncing in my chair while I finished it).</i><br>
<i><br></i>
This itsy-bitsy wall hanging has sides that range in length from 13-15 inches and was quilted with all purpose polyester thread because it was the color I wanted. The Faux Suede feels super nice, but I wouldn't choose to quilt with it again because you can't really iron it, and it was not very friendly to get nicely pressed seams with cotton.<br>
<br>

Thanks for having a look and I hope you are all sewing something that makes you giddy.<br>

I tried my hand at longarm quilting and finished quilting the Bento Box quilt using a pantograph in about 4 hours.<br />
<div>
I used a rental longarm through <a href="http://www.sparrowstudioz.com/">Sparrow Studioz</a> and <a href="http://www.mysewingroom.ca/">My Sewing Room</a> here in Calgary. I used a APQS Lucey longarm and loved having the stitch regulator. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpFDOmN_EOgFOjDJmHFz2VQzV4RodIWhgis5oIlwIfU-E-vbxRtoxl1cgHf9JHxdnpono2MtZ4u1X0BtrXB7fliMkXVxX_UjITl8sIPRpQsYuDJ3b4hipsiSNh5PqxWOtqcxOguEIaFcY_/s640/blogger-image--1411205115.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpFDOmN_EOgFOjDJmHFz2VQzV4RodIWhgis5oIlwIfU-E-vbxRtoxl1cgHf9JHxdnpono2MtZ4u1X0BtrXB7fliMkXVxX_UjITl8sIPRpQsYuDJ3b4hipsiSNh5PqxWOtqcxOguEIaFcY_/s640/blogger-image--1411205115.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The rental program is set up to ensure a good experience for new longarmers. The thread is provided is <a href="http://www.bobbincentral.com/quilting/top-thread/glide.html">Fil-Tec Glide</a> and comes with prewound magnetic bobbins. Using the same thread for all renters means that tension doesn't need to be adjusted very often and there are few thread breaks because Glide thread is so strong. Less thread breaking makes longarming way more fun. I ran into a couple trouble spot s on my quilt and the supervisor in the studio was able to get me out them. </div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Overall I am super happy with the result. There are things I would do differently with my piecing to make my longarming easier... Such as making sure to press seams with flannel open as the big bulky seams were a little rough to go through. And my backing was pretty skippy for loading nicely on the frame. I knew that when I was sewing, but was out of both fabrics that I used on the back.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Since then I have trimmed the quilt and attached the binding to front. Now I just need sometime to attach the back by hand. </div>

Oh well. <div>GeoDad and I went to the gym together on Sunday, and the kids got to play in the Kids Club they have on site. Then it was pouring rain all week. </div><div>It's not that I can't bike in the rain... So much as I have to cross a creek 3 times to get home if I bike to work. That creek had major flooding this time last year so I wasn't going to risk having to take a detour 12km into my ride home. I did get out biking today when the rain stopped.</div><div><br></div><div>Week stats.</div><div>Biked 13km</div><div>Gym once</div><div><br></div><div>Put on a lot of steps side to side to longarm quilt my first quilt. I thought I would have no problem finding the time to quilt it myself... nothing fancy, probably just straight lines with my walking foot... then I got a call and asked to do some contract geophysics work in June. I had promised the quilt would be done before July and if I was going to be doing geophysics in the evenings it was going to cut into my quilting time big time. I can sew blocks together with kids around during the day, but I can't manage a double quilt with them under foot.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9V9sq3hYA8UabKo4PRvIoqcz6cZfxYf9axewhhB2SfIB1o8z4dIa6lixdbgKDAHCrSx_DsjfeyB9dmB_XGF87Og8qzbp1OYfo-2KtOimIVMITVE0p1cp5maUsovuaUI_lOcr2Ny-4tljF/s640/blogger-image-1453764618.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9V9sq3hYA8UabKo4PRvIoqcz6cZfxYf9axewhhB2SfIB1o8z4dIa6lixdbgKDAHCrSx_DsjfeyB9dmB_XGF87Og8qzbp1OYfo-2KtOimIVMITVE0p1cp5maUsovuaUI_lOcr2Ny-4tljF/s640/blogger-image-1453764618.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It was right about the time I got the call about the geophysics work that my local quilt store started a longarm rental program. I jumped and signed myself up for the certification class to be able to use it and have booked my day to go in a quilt the Bento Box. So that is my self imposed deadline. Next Thursday I get to try my hand at longarm quilting, which was one of <a href="http://geomommy.blogspot.ca/2014/05/100th-post-recap-and-new-goals.html">my goals from my 100th post</a>.<br />
<br />
Over the last couple nights I have taken the 42 blocks from individual blocks to a full quilt top and worked on the appliqué block that is going to be the focal point of the back.<br />

<br />
<br />
I want to share more photos, but the friends getting this quilt read my blog, and I want it to be a surprise. So only a few sneak peaks.<br />
<br />
I also finished making 18 flannel prefold diapers to go with the covers I delivered on the May long weekend. It was great to have a serger on hand to finish seams quickly. Thanks Grandma!<br />

<br />
Lastly, I have had lots of time in the yard watching the kids to hand stitch block 2 for Project Seventy-Two. I love the warm weather, and my itsy-bitsy garden certainly does not take much time to care for.<br />

GeoDad and I are a 1 car household in a very car dependant city which makes life a little more difficult some days (and kept us at home most of the winter). But now that I am working days and kids are child care we are finding lots more time to get out and be active.<br>
<br>
I have been walking the kids to their dayhome and then catching the bus, and transfering to the c-train, then walking up to the store where I work. My morning commute is over an hour including drop-off time. Getting home is generally takes an hour with transit, unless I just miss the bus connection, then it is 1:15. Lame right.<br>
<br>
Driving is not better if I do have the car for the day. Traffic has mostly eased up by the time I need to go, but at the end of my shift it can take 40 minutes for me to drive the 11km to get home. Lame again.<br>
<br>
Over the last few weeks I have been cutting out the bus portion of the commute by riding by bike down to the train station. It is all downhill. <i>5km. 12 minutes. Easy.</i> Then after work I got to do the sweat inducing ride back home. <i>5km. All uphill. 23-29 minutes</i> depending on weather. The uphill direction is also into the dominant wind direction. Lame. But it is way nicer than being on the bus.<br>
<br>
So last Saturday, a crazy little voice inside my head thought I should find out how long it takes to bike home. I started the day by doing the easy ride down the hill to train. Riding the train with my bike to work and then at the end of the day setting out for a bike ride home. It was a great ride, other than I had no idea how steep the hill coming out of the park would be.<i> It was brutal - 4% grade brutal</i>. I walked my bike up the hill then biked the last 3 km to get home. So it is a 15km ride home, one big uphill, but generally not a lot of topography. And I get to go through a gorgeous provincial park.<br>

I got home in one piece and was amazed at how much nicer it was to get home without the busy transit experience. No waiting for the train then bus. Not squeezing on to a hot train with grumpy/sweaty/smelly/tired/etc transit users.<br>
<br>
Since last Saturday I have biked home twice more. It has been great. Other than I probably wasn't ready to do it back to back days.<br>
<br>
So although <a href="http://geomommy.blogspot.ca/2014/05/100th-post-recap-and-new-goals.html">2 weeks ago</a> I thought I would not be blogging about exercise/fitness/etc anytime soon. I want to share this and encourage others to get active between sessions on the computer/sewingmachine/tv etc..<br>
<br>
So quick stats for the week.<br>
Biked <b>65km</b> total.<br>
3 rides - 15 km each.<br>
And I went to the gym once.<br>
<br>
Oh, and GeoDad and I are getting married in 274 days, so this is probably a good time to start thinking about how I want to look in my wedding dress (which is already picked). I am getting back on the fitness and exercise bandwagon and I am going to lose my baby weight before the wedding.<br>
<br>
I would love to say that I am off to exercise more, but tonight it is raining and I have a quilt back to getting sewing.<br>
<br>
Have a great weekend.<br>
